Oatmeal savage

March 27, 2010

Dunedin, New Zealand:

I can think of a few bloggers for whom this bumper sticker is totally appropriate:

If only the driver hadn’t been sitting in the front seat or I would have scratched that thing off… maybe. ;)

You know, sometimes it feels like New Zealand is trapped back in time.

Driving between cities, there aren’t any interstates like in America. It might be called “Highway 6″ but you’d better believe this road is going to wind through every small town and around every roundabout in your path. It was the same way in Australia.

That’s completely different from America, where you can drive from Maine to Florida and only know you’re in a new state when palm trees start to appear. In New Zealand, the passage from one city to the next is slow and obvious.

Makes for some great scenery, though. New Zealand wine, anyone?

How about a bungee jump from its first location in New Zealand?

Although Dunedin is certainly more in the 21st century than, say, Ganghwado, there are still signs that history isn’t quite so far behind us.

Like milk bars in Australia (which always make me think of the milk bars in A Clockwork Orange), dairies are basically just a corner store filled with ice cream, sweets and snacks.

The streets of Dunedin are also filled with antique cars and trucks. 1960s and 1970s campervans are popular transport for backpackers and trampers, but there have also been quite a few old ladies tooling around town in cars from about 1952.

I love it. We’re often so quick to embrace what’s new and so it’s refreshing to have a bit of the past in the present. Even at the Otago Museum yesterday, the free documentary about Antarctic scientists who spend four months in total darkness during the winter was from 1992. Which I didn’t realize until it started playing and men sporting bushy beards, acid-washed jeans and using “the most advanced technology” popped up on the screen.

But while I’m wandering around town, can someone please explain what a “normal” school is?

Anyone? Anyone? Bueller?

Today is my last day in Dunedin, then it’s back to Christchurch tomorrow before a flight to Auckland. I’m looking forward to meeting up with my Dad and sister on the North Island on Tuesday! :D

Do you have any bumper stickers on your car? I used to have a “Hillary ’08″ sticker and someone keyed it! :(

BTW, I just started writing for Suite101 about food and healthy living. Check out my first article: Seven Spring Vegetables You Need to Try.

Normal schools are primary/intermediate (elementary) schools attached to a teacher’s college. Don’t know where they got the name from but it was filled with practicing teachers.. Not so much now, just a homage to the ‘old days’… as you called it i suppose.

Interesting! I was so curious — at least I know now there’s not also a “not normal” school. Thanks! :D

I was going to suggest the same thing as Nadia but she beat me to it. Was just an educated guess on my part though. Been interesting reading all your posts.Have a good day!

I have an apple sticker on my car. I used to have an Obama one but I took it off. Not because I don’t like him anymore or anything, just because I didn’t want to seem like I was gloating after the election!

I have a 13.1 sticker, but would gladly trade it for an Oatmeal Savage! Describes me to a tee – I love it!

I don’t have any stickers but Oatmeal savage would DEF be appropriate for me haha.

I love looking at your pictures of Dunedin. I remember climbing the worlds steepest street and it was definitely a chore. Glad I didn’t have any knee problems back then.
