Toga! Toga! Toga!

April 11, 2010

Movies make it seem like toga parties are a college tradition.

But at Zoe and Raquel’s party last night, no one had actually been to a toga party before even though most of us went to big state schools where you’d expect toga parties to be popular. Dressing up for Halloween parties? Yes. Toga? Nope.

Ah well, no reason not to get into the spirit now that we’re college grads. :D

All I can say is this: togas are comfortable! Or, at least, the ones made from bedsheets are. Perfect for falling asleep in as soon as the party is over. After all, you’re already wearing your bed.

Tying a toga is definitely an art but that’s what Google was made for. And then there’s the debate whether or not to wear something underneath your sheets. (For the record, I wore a dress. Don’t want any wardrobe malfunctions!)

Green was the favorite color choice of the evening but after I debated between wearing my childhood Bambi or Little Mermaid sheets, I finally settled on purple. The color of royalty and all… ;)

But really, who cares about the fashion? Even though someone tried to organize a toga fashion show it quickly flopped — togas are great for comfort but not so great for sauntering down a catwalk.

What you really want to know about is the food. Yum. It was more Greek-themed than Roman so big plates of hummus and spanakopita covered that area.

Naturally I stationed myself right next to the snacks table all night, which is really a dangerous place to be when there’s a huge tub of hummus and a platter of vegan chocolate cupcakes. A good Roman time was had by all!

Take that, jet lag. I can fight you — it just takes a 20-ounce Diet Coke and the promise of Greek food. Although now I’m feeling like a 6:00 bedtime is about right. ;) Day tripping to Pittsburgh tomorrow!

Have you been to a toga party? Apparently they didn’t become popular until Animal House in the 1970s but Eleanor Roosevelt once threw a toga party to spoof her husband’s supporters. Toga in the White House?

It’s your last chance to win a New Zealand souvenir!

While I was at the party, I didn’t get the chance to see Tina Fey host SNL. Everything she does makes me laugh — “30 Rock” is the best show on TV by far — and this latest Sarah Palin sketch is too good to be missed. Tina Fey for President!

Hee, we’ve had a lot of toga days during my senior year of high school, but I never participated…now I wish I had! When else am I gonna be able to wear a toga and not feel stupid?

    Spanakopita is my favourite :D

Of course, you know that in Roman times togas were only for men. Married women wore the stola, so that’s what I’d wear if anyone invited me to a toga party. Which they haven’t – but it never hurts to have a plan ;)

I’ve personally never been to a toga party, but I think they are pretty common with the sororities around here. I’m actually a little jealous of you. It looks fun!

Toga Parties were pretty big at my school ( San Diego State circa 1994-98) . But, then again I did go to one on the biggest party schools in the country so I guess Toga parties would be expected…lol
