Eating al fresco at Vasilis

July 24, 2010

Every neighborhood has that one restaurant where everyone goes and there’s always a wait. Lunch, dinner — it’s packed but worth sticking around!

In my mom’s neighborhood, that place is Vasilis Mediterranean Grill, a family-owned restaurant that is the place to go for authentic, delicious, affordable Greek food.

During lunch, the patio is filled with ‘ladies who lunch’enjoying a glass of white wine with salad. During dinner, the restaurant is packed with families and friends.

Thankfully the patio is dog-friendly so we could bring Lexie. She loved sniffing everyone who walked by and the server very kindly brought out a bowl of water.

It’s so scorching these days — 107* today with heat index! — that a cold lunch is the best thing. I opted for the Pikilia (trio) mezze platter of tzatziki, melitzanosalata (eggplant dip) and hummus.

Not sure if there were enough cucumbers… ;)

And, of course, hummus — no Greek meal is complete without hummus:

Actually, no meal is complete without hummus, not just a Greek meal. I have hummus every single day with my lunch as the perfect protein to pair with a salad and wrap.

I have an entire year of hummus-hunting to make up for!

If you’re in the Gaithersburg/Kentlands area, you must visit Vasilis. It’s a true neighborhood hangout with fantastic service, a casual atmosphere and absolutely awesome food.

Does your neighborhood have a spot where everyone goes?

Unfortunately we don't have any neighbourhood restaurants – I really need to move closer to the city centre! :)

I actually bought my wedding dress in the Kentlands. Wish I knew about that restaurant! I love hummus.

At the wedding dress shop? What a small, small world!

We definitely have a few popular places like that here, and I love that. One of my favorite things about going to them is that I know I’ll almost always see someone familiar, often times a high school classmate who I haven’t talked with in years. It’s great to have that sense of community!

I’m not sure if we have places where *everyone* goes, but I certainly have a set of places that I go to often. Some busier than others.

    Those dips look yummy :D

I just wish I could figure out how to make homemade hummus taste as amazing as the ones from restaurants!

LSU definitely has all of it’s cool places where everyone goes… and I haven’t been to most of them.
