Southern-style slurping
Ah, where were we?
Oh yes, Colonial Williamsburg. We already talked about the beautiful day, beautiful buildings and beautiful hats… now, let’s talk food.
There are a bunch of restaurants in Colonial Williamsburg (and of course plenty more in the city of Williamsburg) but wanted a true Southern meal. For that, we went to The King’s Arms Tavern.
It was a hot day so a cold drink was definitely in order. I was excited to hear that they brew their own root beer and ginger ale on-site.
Perfect! Such strong, refreshing flavor.
There was a sad lack of vegetarian entrees but that’s okay because I already knew what I wanted: peanut soup.
Sounds strange, right? Well, it was but it was definitely the most traditional thing on the menu so that’s what I ordered. Along with a salad, natch.
The good: lots of veggies on the salad and fresh-baked bread while we waited for the main course.
The mediocre: Um, peanut soup tastes like a bowl of peanut butter.
I like peanut butter as much as the next girl — no, probably more than the next girl — but it was a little overpowering for me.
Good in a small portion but I wont be ordering peanut soup again.
As for the salad, it was absolutely swimming in dressing. Vegetables: love. Salad dressing: meh.
Simone went for a traditional meat-and-veg pie.
I had a little bite of the veg and crust and… YUM! She definitely picked a winner. It made me miss the days of walking past The West Cornwall Pasty Company every day while living in London. A hot pasty during cold weather is the best.
Please ignore the fact that it was 95* outside and we ordered soup and pie.
But wait, there’s more! You have to have dessert! Someone hinted that a tour of the historical coffee house ended with a free sample of locally-made hot chocolate.
Pure, rich chocolate with just a hint of chili. A great cap-off.
We weren’t done chowing down yet… here’s a hint of what’s to come:
Oh… yes…!
Peanut soup: yay or nay?

I’m most intrigued by that last picture … looks good!!
Just you wait!
Peanut Soup, yay!

Cool!
I’ve never tried peanut soup but I don’t think that would be my favorite thing….
That meat and veggie pie, however, looks like all kinds of awesome!
The pie totally trumped the soup.
umm….peanut soup is a nay.
It was definitely a one-time thing.
